A Tree and Me uses the metaphor of a tree to describe all three protective factors that build resilience in young children- attachment, initiative and self-control. The tree uses its roots to hold itself firmly to the earth. Similarly, from the beginning of my life I’m rooted to my family and loved ones. A tree is constantly growing and changing making new branches and leaves, reaching higher and higher. A tree controls the life cycle of its leaves. It holds on to them in a storm. It knows to let go of them in the fall. So too I hold my feelings or let them go when it is time. Lyrics I started small, I'm growing tall A tree is attached to the earth A tree grows limbs and branches A tree holds its leaves, strong in the wind Tips for Parents This song is part of our Songs of Belonging series, which consists of the following twelve song titles: This song is available in the following formats:
A tree and me are very different
And yet we're both the same
How could that be, me and a tree?
Listen, I'll explain
A tree was once a seed
To live happily, a tree and me
Use the same three things
Its roots are in the ground
I'm attached, from my birth
To loved ones all around
Reaching wide and high
I try new things all the time
Reaching for the sky
In autumn let's them go
I know when to hold on and when to let go
I use my self control
And yet the same as can be
We attach, then grow and use self control
A tree and me
