This wonderful duet with David and Molly McGrath reminds us parents that anytime we spend with our child can be special. Often the demands of modern life make us feel rushed and there doesn't seem to be enough minutes in the day to plan and implement "quality time" with our child. This song makes the point that any shared time can be quality time. Singing a song together while driving in the car is special. Playing rhyming word games while doing dishes is special. It's not the activity that makes shared time "quality", it's your attention that does.
Tips for Parents
- Sometimes we parents are so busy that we have to "cue" ourselves to create shared times with our child. One way of doing this is what we call the penny transfer technique. Let's say this Saturday I have the goal of eight shared experiences with my son. I start the day with eight pennies in my right pocket. The jingling sound will be a good reminder. Each time I orchestrate a quality shared time with my son I transfer a penny from my right pocket to my left. By the end of the day I've made it easy to reach my goal and we both had a good time doing it.
