The confident, resilient child is one who is optimistic about the future. The relatively new field of Positive Psychology has generated research that shows that optimism as a personality trait is associated with good physical and mental health. Children come into this world with a natural drive to happiness. But inadequate relationships with caregivers create obstacles to happiness. Inconsistency in attachment makes the world unpredictable and scary.

Tips for Parents
- Ritualize optimistic anticipation. When getting your child up and helping them with dressing, etc., wonder out loud about the good things that will happen that day. Make sure to let them contribute their own interpretations.
- Anticipate milestones in your child's life with great optimism. i.e. "You're going to have so much fun at your new school."
