This creative children's song features no instruments other than David's voice and rubber bands stretched across various materials. When we teach parents, teachers and mental health professionals about resilience in young children, we use a rubber band to explain the concept. A rubber band can be stressed and stretch, but quickly returns to its regular shape when the stressor is gone. Similarly, the resilient child quickly "bounces back" from stress or trauma. This ability to recover quickly from a stressful experience is important to brain development. When a child is stressed the brain is bathed in a stress hormone called cortisol. If cortisol levels remain high, the hormone starts to interfere with the development of connections within the brain and the "mylenation" of existing brain pathways that make them more efficient.
One of the best predictors of being able to bounce back quickly from stress is the ongoing secure attachment to a loving caregiver. A child that has experienced consistent parental love is in the best position to be immune to the long term negative effects of stress or trauma.
Lyrics
Hey, Jack, I bounce back - rubber band
Hey, Jack, I bounce back - rubber band
I'm sturdy, I'm strong
Not afraid to get dirty all day long
Hey Jack, Hey Jill
Am I gonna make it? You know I will 'cause
Chorus: I am a rubber band
I am a rubber band
Who can bounce back? I can
I am a rubber band
I'm stretchable, I'm flexible - rubber band
I'm stretchable, I'm flexible - rubber band
I stretch, I flex
Always ready for what comes next
I shrink, I grow
Stop and think, everybody knows that
Chorus: repeat chorus
I hold things together - rubber band
I hold things together - rubber band
I hold it together, never mind the weather
Sturdy and strong all day long
I stretch and bend, I flex again
I'm elastic, I'm fantastic
Jack and Jill came walking down the hill
Everything alright, what a beautiful sight
Say, how did you fix your water can?
Said, put it back together with a rubber band
Chorus: repeat chorus
Tips for Parents
- Use children's books to show how the characters in the book bounced back from a bad experience. Discuss ways that you use to bounce back from a negative experience, such as using positive self-talk.
