Lyrics
Little Linda loves to lick her lollipop
Little Linda loves to lick her lollipop
Licking, licking, longer, longer
Will she ever stop
Little Linda loves to lick her lollipop
Little Larry loves to lick his lollipop
Little Larry loves to lick his lollipop
Licking, licking, longer, longer
Will he ever stop
Little Larry loves to lick his lollipop
Tips for Parents
- Ask your child, "What sound are we working on? Is your tongue pointing up or down when you say ‘L’?"
- Warm up for singing this song like an "opera singer" with a strong "LA-LA-LA-LA".
- Make an L-shape with your index finger and thumb and tap your thumb to their chin as you sing the words.
- Ask your child to pretend they are holding a lollipop. Ask them what direction it is pointing….."Up". This is a cue for tongue placement in making the sound.
- Use the song when the child is ready to practice correct production of /l/.
- Practice when riding in the car.
- Lollipop Listening- Give your child a lollipop. Read a list of words or show a sequence of pictures, many starting with the /l/ sounds. Tell them they can lick their lollipop every time they hear an /l/ word.
- L's on the Line- String a clothesline across the room. Let your child choose an /l/ word or picture (e.g. leg, lamb, leaf, lamp, lime, lace, laundry, lettuce, lion, lemon, ladder) from the "laundry" bag and have them practice the word as they use a clothespin to attach their picture to the line. When all the pictures or word are up, "read" the line of words together.
- Children love to march. March in place and say "left" every time your left foot touches the floor. Make up nonsense marching chants with words starting with /l/ that your child can repeat.

"L" is a speech sound that can be challenging. Many young children will substitute the "w" sound for /l/. While some children "grow out” of this mispronunciation, other children need direct teaching to lift their tongue tip up to the roof of their mouth. This song provides a context for practicing the /l/ sound once it has been learned so that the child can begin to use this sound in connected speech.
