Lyrics
Down in the dumps, sad and grumpy
Feeling like nobody cares
All by myself until someone else
Sees me sitting there
They listen to my troubles
Help me work it through
Sadness pops like bubbles
I feel brand new
Now I'm strong and steady
And feeling ready
To help anyone who might be
Down in the dumps
Sad and grumpy like me
The Research Behind This Song
The emerging field of Positive Psychology has given us some important insight into the origins of optimism and pessimism. In his esteemed book, The Optimistic Child (1995), Martin Seligman showed that early in life children develop an explanatory style as a way of understanding the inner feelings generated by external events. By focusing on well-being rather than well-doing we can help the child internalize optimistic self-talk. When a child is talking about a negative experience we should use SITUATIONAL language. When a child is talking about a positive event, we should use UNIVERSAL language. In this way a child internalizes expectations of positive events.
