Children have a constrained sense of belonging. They focus on their immediate family. This simple little song provides the opportunity for the teacher to help children broaden their sense of belonging in a “circle that grows”. We want children to experience a sense of belonging to ever broadening circles from friends and school to neighbors and community and to the whole human family. We want to focus children on rules for inclusion rather than exclusion; the ways we’re all alike rather than ways we’re different. This song produces positive emotions about growing our circle of friends.
