One of the best ways to build motivation to mastery in your child is to celebrate successful mastery of skills. Celebration is particularly important when mastery has required time and effort. Children who has been persistent in working on a task, puzzle or project really appreciate an adult’s recognition of their effort in a real celebration of their success. This celebration builds self esteem and reinforces the value of persistence and effort to eventual success.
Lyrics
When I do something great
I like to celebrate
I say, "Yes!"
I say, "Whoo!"
I say, "See what I can do!"
Celebrate, celebrate
I like to celebrate
I'll celebrate with you.
When __________ does something great
___________ likes to celebrate
(S)He says, "Yes!"
(S)He says, "Whoo!"
(S)He says. "See what I can do!"
Celebrate, celebrate
___________ likes to celebrate
I'll celebrate with you.
When we do something great
We like to celebrate
We say, "Yes!"
We say, "Whoo!"
We say. "See what we can do!"
Celebrate, celebrate
We like to celebrate
We'll celebrate with you.
Tips for Parents
- Ask your child, "What kind of things should we celebrate?" They might say birthdays, Christmas, etc. Prompt them to think about achievements, especially those requiring effort.
- Help your child really get animated and “pumped” in singing the song. The more active the body, the more positive emotional tone, the more the celebration will be remembered and will reinforce future effort and persistence.
- Being selective about celebrations will make them more memorable. Restrict them to demonstrations of mastery with effort.
- Sometimes it is just as important to celebrate effort even when the child wasn’t successful. Even if a child makes a mistake, if they continue their effort they have associated mistakes with learning not failing. This too, is cause for celebration.
- Celebrate your own successes resulting from effort as a way of reinforcing your child’s understanding of the positive nature of effort and persistence.
- Celebration T-shirts - Embellish t-shirts together with motivation words/phrases written on it such as Kept On Trying, Worked Hard, Learned From Mistakes, etc.
