There are two key messages in this song. The first is the title, “Anything’s Possible.” This is a belief every parent wants their child to develop. There are no limits on what you can be or do. We want our children to have the confidence and competence to become whatever they want. The child who truly believes that anything’s possible is a child who is motivated to master many skills. Optimism puts new skills in reach. And we as parents should praise effort and persistence on task.
The second key message is that causes of positive events are internal. The lyrics, “with my ability there’s possibility,” convey this message. This belief is what child development researchers call an internal locus of control. What happens to me is determined by my actions rather than by luck or powerful others. Even if something bad happens, I can take actions that make it better. Children with an internal locus of control are more likely to be goal-directed and more likely to problem solve. We as teachers and parents can frequently give the key message that anything’s possible and we can model an internal locus of control.
Anything’s Possible
by Mary Hulefeld
Chorus:
Anything’s possible, anything’s possible
Anything’s possible, anything’s possible
I am growing and I am going so far
With my ability, with my ability
There’s possibility, there’s possibility
I am dreaming and I am reaching for stars
Anything’s possible
I can be a ballet dancer spinning around
I can be a farmer planting seeds in the ground
A voice in a choir, a part of a team
A teacher who is helping little children to read
Verse:
I can be an astronaut and fly up in space
I can be a runner in a marathon race
A doctor who heals, a chef who cooks meals
The President of the United States
